A rich and ancient history
Naples is among the oldest European cities. Founded by the Greek, the town was at the time a harbour named Parthenope. According to Greek mythology, Parthenope was a siren who washed ashore at Naples after unsuccessfully luring Odysseus into the sea. As centuries went by, the city gained importance, becoming a cultural pole. Parthenope was renamed Neapolis and the city grew. It became Roman during the 3rd century BC. Greek and Roman architecture meet in this marvellous city.
The capital of Campania later was taken by the Ostrogoths, the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, the Spanish lead by Alfonso V of Aragon…
And nowadays?

Naples and classical music
Naples houses one of the oldest operas in the world: the Teatro di San Carlo, built in 1737. The theatre could, at the time, welcome 3 000 persons, out of which 1 379 sitting. This opera is a jewel created by Giovanni Antonio Medrano. The gold and blue ornaments illustrate Charles III of Bourbon's royal power.
Sarro's Achille in Sciro is the opera which inaugurated the theatre, but the first seasons are mainly composed of ballets.
The Teatro di San Carlo soon became an European musical scene, attracting musicians such as Haydn or Bach. Some of the most famous composers including Rossini and later Donizetti took the artistic direction of the theatre. They composed several successful operas such as Maria Stuarda (1834) or Lucia di Lammermoor (1835) in the theatre.
After the reunification of Italy in 1861, the Teatro di san Carlo lost of its importance as Milano's La Scala became Italy musical centre.
Nowadays, the Teatro di San Carlo offers a wide range of operas, ballets and concerts every season. Tickets for the Teatro di San Carlo are always highly sought after, as the choice of performers and musicians is so great! The theatre itself is also a jewel!
