This opera house is a jewel of Giovanni Antonio Medrano's architecture, illustrating the royal power of Charles III of Bourbon with its gold and blue ornamentation.

The Teatro di San Carlo became the European musical stage par excellence, attracting foreign musicians such as Haydn and Bach. Famous composers such as Gioachino Rossini and later Gaetano Donizetti were artistic directors of the Teatro di San Carlo.
