The Teatro alla Scala is a venue that has built its legend thanks to composers, artists, and performances that have marked the history of opera. All music lovers expect to experience formidable emotions in the temple of opera at some point. This 2024-2025 season offers them more than one occasion to live music intensely.
The first major event of the season is, as always, the opening show on December 7, the day of Saint Ambrose, patron of the grand city of Milan. Riccardo Chailly, the immense conductor and artistic director of La Scala, has chosen one of Verdi's many masterpieces, rarely performed because it demands a lot from the singers. La forza del destino by Verdi is already making headlines because Chailly has brought together Anna Netrebko, Jonas Kaufmann, and Ludovic Tézier, the biggest opera stars on the international scene. Tickets must be booked urgently as they will sell out quickly. A second equally fabulous cast should be considered as well, with Elena Stikhina, Luciano Ganci, and Enkhbat Amartuvshin who are also exceptional singers.
With, of course, a preference for Italian, all repertoires are represented at La Scala in Milan, such as the baroque which is quite remarkable this 2024-2025 season. L’Orontea by Cesti is defended by great specialists (Giovanni Antonini, Stéphanie d’Oustrac, Carlo Vistoli) in the always inventive staging of Robert Carsen, but the show that must be seen this season at the Teatro alla Scala di Milano is the improbable and hilarious L’Opera seria by Gassmann. The piece tells the adventures of a performance, and knowing that the brilliant director Laurent Pelly is at the helm, you must book your opera tickets as soon as possible not to miss this cast featuring the comic talent of Pietro Spagnoli or Julie Fuchs, among others.
During the 2024-2025 season, music lovers can see a more contemporary repertoire with the comedy Il Cappello di paglia di Firenze by Nino Rota, well known for the music he composed for Fellini. Contemporary creation is not forgotten and the premiere of Il nome della rosa by Francesco Filidei based on the fabulous novel by Umberto Eco, The Name of the Rose, will make a big splash. Eugene Onegin by Tchaikovsky or a stunning Der Rosenkavalier (The Knight of the Rose) by Richard Strauss with a very luxurious cast (Krassimira Stoyanova, Kate Lindsey, Sabine Devieilhe, and Günther Groissböck) are definitely to be seen. As well as this Così fan tutte by Mozart entrusted to Robert Carsen, the young genius, and featuring very beautiful voices (Elsa Dreisig, Sandrine Piau, Gerald Finley).
The great masterpieces of Italian opera such as Cenerentola by Rossini, Tosca by Puccini (with Elena Stikhina or Chiara Isotton) or Falstaff by Verdi with the unbeatable Ambrogio Maestri (in the legendary production of Giorgio Strehler) and other well-known opera titles spark renewed interest when performed by the greatest artists. Marina Rebeka is the new star of La Scala in Milan, appearing in Norma by Bellini conducted by Fabio Luisi. She shares the stage with Freddie De Tommaso, the tenor everyone is talking about. Another duo of great artists is expected in La Fille du Régiment, a joyous masterpiece by Donizetti featuring Julie Fuchs and Juan Diego Flórez. Enkhbat Amartuvshin and Regula Mühlemann are father and daughter in an emotional Rigoletto where we will applaud the flair of Vittorio Grigòlo, the flamboyant tenor.
The most anticipated productions, those that all music lovers will prioritize reserving, are the first three episodes of the Wagnerian Tetralogy where the exceptional Christian Thielemann conducts one of the most fabulous opera orchestras in the world. He has at his disposal undoubtedly the greatest Wagnerian singers with Michael Volle as Wotan, Klaus Florian Vogt as Siegfried, and Elza van den Heever as Siglinde and Camilla Nylund as Brünnhilde in the intelligent staging by David McVicar.
But the reputation of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan is also due to its ballet. The Corpo di Ballo del Teatro alla Scala is one of the most renowned dance companies in Italy, if not the most prestigious, sharing between contemporary dance and classical dance. The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, or Paquita are on the program in the famous choreographies by Rudolf Nureyev, Pierre Lacotte, Marius Petipa, and Lev Ivanov, not to mention shows by George Balanchine or Jerome Robbins. The 2024-2025 dance season also features the names of great contemporary choreographers, John Neumeier, William Forsythe, Edward Clug, and Angelin Preljocaj. Ballet lovers will not miss La Dame aux Camélias danced by Roberto Bolle, international star and undisputed star of dance and ballet.
La Scala also features incredible singing recitals, such as the splendid soprano Asmik Grigorian who performs Richard Strauss Lieder, Joyce DiDonato, or Erwin Schrott the superb ones, and the exceptional Ludovic Tézier in songs by Duparc, Schumann, and Wagner. In Winterreise, the absolute masterpiece by Schubert which he performs like no one else, Matthias Goerne is accompanied by the extraordinary pianist Maria João Pires for a single performance that must be booked as soon as possible!
The fabulous pianist recitals are also great opportunities to visit La Scala, especially with names like Alexandre Kantorow, Mitsuko Uchida, Nikolai Lugansky, Igor Levit, or Jan Lisiecki. On the concert side, thanks to the work of Riccardo Chailly, the Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala (sometimes renamed the Filarmonica della Scala) is now an orchestra that counts among the great symphonic ensembles in Europe. Under his direction, La Scala in Milan also offers a very beautiful concert season (notably the Gurre-Lieder by Schoenberg with Andreas Schager, Camilla Nylund, Michael Volle). The other conductors who follow each other on the podium are as renowned and different as Simone Young, Susanna Mälkki, Daniele Gatti, Tugan Sokhiev, or Lorenzo Viotti. It is also worth noting the presence of such impressive orchestras as the Wiener Philharmoniker conducted by Riccardo Muti. Esa-Pekka Salonen visits La Scala with the Philharmonia Orchestra, Antonio Pappano and the London Symphony Orchestra (with the magnificent soloist Lisa Batiashvili in Mozart), and the young and grand conductor Raphaël Pichon with his ensemble Pygmalion to perform Johannes-Passion BWV 245 by Bach. Another event, the rare Kirill Petrenko conducts not his orchestra, the Berliner Philharmoniker, but the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in a Mozart and Brahms program. Finally, if there was only one event to remember in this exceptional 2024-2025 season of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, it is undoubtedly this Puccini anniversary concert conducted by Riccardo Chailly with Anna Netrebko and Jonas Kaufmann, no less!
