Teatro alla Scala is a hall that has built its legend thanks to the composers, artists and performances that have marked the history of opera. All music lovers expect to experience great emotions in the temple of opera. Music & Opera offers complete musical stays: performance and accommodation. This 2022-2023 season offers them more than one opportunity to experience music intensely.
The first major event of the season is, as always, the opening performance on 7 December, the day of Saint Ambrose, patron saint of the city. Riccardo Chailly, the great conductor and artistic director of La Scala, has chosen a Russian opera, for once. Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov is a hymn to the freedom of a people who rise up to overthrow a tyrant. All casts are always carefully chosen. It will come as no surprise to anyone to find the great baritone Ildar Abdrazakov at the head of a prestigious cast, as he is in many titles. All repertoires are represented at La Scala, such as Richard Strauss's Salome (conducted by Zubin Mehta), from the baroque with Vinci's rare Li zite 'n galera to be rediscovered (with Francesca Aspromonte, Raffaele Pe and Filippo Mineccia).
In the 2022-2023 season, music lovers can see Dvorák's Rusalka or Britten's breathtaking Peter Grimes (directed by Robert Carsen) and the great Italian opera masterpieces such as Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Operas with well-known titles attract renewed interest when performed by top artists. Marina Rebeka is the new star of La Scala in Milan, appearing in Mahler's Symphony No. 8 conducted by Riccardo Chailly, Puccini's La Bohème in Franco Zeffirelli's immortal staging. She shares the stage with Freddie De Tommaso, the tenor everyone is talking about. The soprano is also cast in a rare Verdi opera, I Vespri Siciliani. Another pairing that is likely to make headlines is Lisette Oropesa as Lucia di Lammermoor, Donizetti's absolute masterpiece. She is ideal opposite Juan Diego Flórez, a superstar tenor in Yannis Kokkos' staging and Riccardo Chailly's direction. The most eagerly awaited production, the one that all music lovers will reserve as a priority, is Giordano's Andrea Chénier, where the exceptional Jonas Kaufmann (alternating with Yusif Eyvazov) has as his partner the divine Sonya Yoncheva (and Ambrogio Maestri, an equally fabulous baritone). Anna Netrebko, another superstar soprano, returns to La Scala in a role worthy of her talent in Verdi's Macbeth, where she shares the stage with two great voices, Luca Salsi and Enkhbat Amartuvshin (the greatest Macbeths of their generation), alternating with Ekaterina Semenchuk. Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann in the production by the great director Davide Livermore with Vittorio Grigòlo and Ildar Abdrazakov in the four diabolical roles is also worth mentioning. But the reputation of Milan's Teatro alla Scala is also due to its ballet. The Corpo di Ballo del Teatro alla Scala is one of the most renowned dance companies in Italy, if not the most prestigious, and it is divided between contemporary and classical dance. The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, Swan Lake and The Corsair are performed in the famous choreographies of Rudolf Nureyev, Kenneth MacMillan, Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov.
The 2022-2023 dance season will also feature the names of the great contemporary choreographers Jirí Kylián, John Neumeier, William Forsythe and David Dawson and Nacho Duato. La Scala also offers incredible singing recitals with, for example, tenors Benjamin Bernheim and Vittorio Grigòlo or baritones Michael Volle and Luca Salsi, but the sopranos are not to be missed. Renée Fleming is accompanied by the extraordinary pianist Evgeny Kissin or perhaps even more impressive, Anna Netrebko and Elena Bashkirova! Recitals by fabulous pianists are also great opportunities to visit La Scala, especially with names like Khatia Buniatishvili, Yuja Wang, Maurizio Pollini, Rudolf Buchbinder or Jan Lisiecki. On the concert side, thanks to the work of Riccardo Chailly, the Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala is now an orchestra that ranks among the great symphony ensembles of Europe. The conductors who succeed one another are as renowned and diverse as Zubin Mehta, Daniel Harding and Lorenzo Viotti, with soloists such as the talented Daniel Lozakovitj and Igor Levit.
