A highlight of the La Fenice season! Donizetti's opera Roberto Devereux must be booked with the tenor Enea Scala and soprano Roberta Mantegna, eagerly awaited as Elisabetta.
The great international repertoire is on display at La Fenice in Venice with the famous Carmen in the direction of Calixto Bieito and conducted by the great Myung-Whun Chung. Another huge masterpiece of French opera, Faust by Gounod is directed by Frédéric Chaslin. Of course, in an opera house like this, the Italian repertoire is predominant with great composers as Donizetti, Rossini (and their masterpieces, L'Elisir d'Amore, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, ...) and of course, Verdi.
Verdi is without a doubt the most popular Italian opera composer in the world. His masterpieces evidently have their place in the idyllic setting of La Fenice in Venice such as Don Carlo in the staging of Robert Carsen, Il Trovatore or the magnificent Aida. Beautiful singers follow each other on stage, such as soprano Maria Agresta, Roberta Mantegna, tenor Piero Pretti and bass Alex Esposito.
The history of La Fenice is often visited with this season, the Cambiale di matrimonio of the magnificent Rossini that must be seen in Venice, the place of its creation. Rigoletto is with La Traviata, the other great masterpiece that was born in La Fenice. This season 2020, the production of the successful director Damiano Michieletto is in reprise with a luxurious distribution. Luca Salsi is one of the best current defenders of the title role and his partners have the beautiful voices of Claudia Pavone and Iván Ayón Rivas. A prestigious concert series completes this rich 2019-2020 program with the most famous batons. The great conductor Myung-Whun Chung is very popular in Venice. He conducts the prestigious Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden in a beautiful program of Dvorák / Brahms and also the Orchestra and Coro del Teatro La Fenice in Mahler's Symphony No. 3. In this great year of Beethoven, the orchestra welcomes Rudolf Buchbinder to perform the Concertos for Piano Nos. 3 & 5 and Hartmut Haenchen who conducts the sensational symphony No. 9. Other events are not to be missed such as the exceptional performances of the ballet Duse, by the great choreographer John Neumeier with the Hamburg Ballett.
