What shows are to see in Liège this season?
Liège, a French-speaking city in eastern Belgium, is the capital of the province of Liège and the economic capital of Wallonia. Until the end of the 18th century, Liege was the capital of the Principality of Liege. Today it is the official economic capital of Wallonia.
Nicknamed the "Cité Ardente", Liège is the leading tourist city in Wallonia. Its historic heart is without doubt one of the most historically significant districts, with the Palace of the Prince-Bishops, the Place Saint-Lambert, the Town Hall and its many narrow streets and alleys.
Music has left its mark on the history of Liège: from Étienne de Liège in the 11th century, through Cicognia in the 14th century, through Liège's comic opera in the 18th century, to César Franck, André Grétry and Eugène Ysaÿe.
There are two major cultural institutions in Liège: the Royal Opera of Wallonie and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Liège.
The Opéra Royal de Wallonie (ORW), formerly the Théâtre Royal de Liège, built in 1820 by the architect Auguste Duckers, has a 1,033-seat auditorium and presents around fifty shows a year.
This Mecca of Liège culture presents true opera masterpieces. Since 2012, following a complete restoration both inside and out, the Opera has regained its magnificent Italian-style auditorium and stage machinery that is perfectly adapted to modern techniques.
Book your tickets for the Royal Opera of Wallonie, whose modern and original architecture will not fail to seduce you, or for a concert by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Liege.
