The Teatro San Carlo in Naples is without doubt the most beautiful opera theater in Italy (not to mention, of course, the Teatro La Fenice in Venice or the Scala in Milan). A visit to the capital of Campania can only be crowned with the booking of opera places to attend a performance in this place of legend. The season is sufficiently adorned to find the ballet, the opera or the concert that will suit each spectator. The season 2019-2020 shows, as usual, the great opera performances such as Norma of Bellini (alternating Angela Meade and María José Siri) and Puccini's masterpieces like Tosca with the revelation Enkhbat Amartuvshin in the role of Scarpia, those of Verdi (Aida and La Traviata) or the immortal Carmen by Bizet (with Clémentine Margaine) ideally programmed in the summer. Ballet side, The Nutcracker is a fundamental show of the holiday season that always delights young and old. Don Quixote and Cinderella are great classics and shows of incredible intensity and lyricism that must be seen once and again. Also noteworthy, this famous Pulcinella on the music of Stravinsky takes life in the choreography of Francesco Nappa. The more contemporary dance is also to be seen with the dancers of the Corpo di Ballo del Teatro di San Carlo in Ravel's Bolero by the choreographer Giuseppe Picone or the ballet Amede on the music of the divine Mozart.
Since taking over the artistic direction of the orchestra (l´Orchestra del Teatro di San Carlo), conductor Juraj Valčuha has been offering a series of first-class concerts. With distinguished guests such as renowned conductors Daniele Gatti or Dennis Russell Davies, he has built a symphonic program that gives pride of place to great composers such as Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Richard Strauss, Respighi or Shostakovich. Among the concerts directed by Juraj Valcuha, there is a brilliant Grieg Piano Concerto with Alexander Malofeev or a powerful Stabat Mater by Rossini. A very beautiful Passion according to St. Matthew of Bach is also expected with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and the RIAS Kammerchor. About voices, an undisputable recital is announced. The opportunities to applaud the superb mezzo Joyce DiDonato are not to be missed especially in the baroque repertoire accompanied by the excellent Maxim Emelyanychev at the head of Il Pomo d'Oro. It is advised to urgently reserve your places for this spectacle.
The pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet is also to be seen in recital to interpret Debussy's Préludes with passion and sensitivity. Other great stars to be expected this season 2019-2020 from Teatro San Carlo are David Fray or violinists Patricia Kopatchinskaja and Viviane Hagner. Conductor Iván Fischer creates the event with the Budapest Festival Orchestra in a program of Sibelius, Mahler and Strauss.
But for the international opera scene, it is the presence of the great Riccardo Muti, probably the greatest conductor of today, that is essential. Tickets for these concerts are to be reserved as soon as possible. At the head of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, he directs Dvorák's Symphony No. 9 in the New World and an exciting program of Mercadante, Schubert and Tchaikovsky with the Orchestra del Teatro di San Carlo.
Opera is obviously at the center of the rich programming. The Italian repertoire is in its place in the wonderful Teatro San Carlo in Naples with splendors of the opera as I Puritani of Bellini (with Jessica Pratt or Maria Grazia Schiavo), the rare and grand Maometto II of Rossini, the very moving La Rondine of Puccini or the historic Il Maestro di Cappella by Cimarosa and La Serva Padrona from Paisiello.
But the great international repertoire is not forgotten thanks to Mozart's Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) directed by Roberto Andò, Die lustige Witwe (The Merry Widow) by Lehár in the production of Damiano Michieletto. Also worth noting, Prokofiev's L´Amour des trois oranges (The Love for Three Oranges) in its original French version and the contemporary creation with Winter Journey by the famous composer Ludovico Einaudi are on display at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples. All you have to do is reserve your tickets!
