A little history
The territory was populated by the Lenapes before the Europeans arrived. Commissioned by the French king, Giovanni de Verrazano discovered the New York bay in 1524. However, Francis I decided to install his colony elsewhere.
In 1609, Henry Hudson arrived in the New York bay and sailed up the Hudson river to find a new route to India under the command of the Dutch East India Company. The region became Dutch in 1624. The colony of the "New Amsterdam" established itself in the southern part of today's Manhattan.
New Amsterdam was conquered by the English in 1664 and renamed New York. In 1700, the city had 5000 inhabitants. Trading became more and more important when the Great Dock was built on the East River in 1676.
During the Independence War, New York became a strategically important. Georges Washington fortified the city and lead the Continental Army against the English. In 1776, the Battle of Long Island was lost and a quarter of New York City was burnt to the ground. Until 1783, New York remained under British control.
George Washington made his oath on the balcony of the Federal Hall National Memorial when he became the first president of the United States of America in 1789.
In the 1790's, New York City grew consequently. Industrialisation allowed a major development of the city. Between 1820 and 1890, many immigrants settled in NYC as they sought the American Dream. Most of them were German or Irish and fled the persecutions and crises in Europe.
During the twentieth century, the city massively developed: in 1929, New York City had 188 buildings with over 20 floors. Factories settled outside the city due to lack of space on the main island.
New York became a major cultural centre when numerous museums opened and many artists and intellectuals arrived. The Museum of Modern Art opened in 1929 and the Whitney Museum of American Art opened in 1931: NYC became one of the capitals of modern art.
After WWII, counterculture developed. Pop art, off-Broadway theatre and other art forms saw the light of the day to denounce the consumer society.
What to do in the Big Apple?
One of the first things you'll notice is the architecture. Skyscrapers overlook Manhattan. Who doesn't know the art-déco styled Empire State Building from 1931 and who has never seen the Chrysler Building, if only on a picture? Walking around the different blocks is a must! Manhattan, Bronx, Harlem… you will feel like they're all different cities! You should also stroll around Central Park, the biggest park of the city!
Times Square has to be visited both during daytime and night time: the liveliness and the lights will amaze you! If you'd love enjoying a musical, Broadway's THE place to go!
For all art lovers out there, visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art or the museum of Modern Art! The American Museum of Natural History is also worth the detour: it is one of the most renowed museums in the world.

The Carnegie Hall was inaugurated in 1891, despite the construction ending in 1897.
In 1960, when the New York Philharmonic Orchestra moved to the Lincoln Center, the building is threatened to be destroyed. It is, however, bought by the city which gives it a status of historical building in 1964.
The Carnegie Hall includes three auditoriums: the Isaac Stern Auditorium, the Judy and Arthur Zenkel Hall and the the Joan and Stanford I. Weill Recital Hall. The external architecture is inspired by Italian Renaissance and the interior is white and golden.
Many celebrities have performed there! One key example is the concert conducted by Leonard Bernstein, with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Vladimir Horowitz, Yehudi Menuhin, Mstislav Rostropovitch, Isaac Stern and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in 1976!
The Metropolitan Opera is located in the Lincoln Center and was inaugurated in 1966. Before that, the old New York Opera was on Broadway and dated from 1883. It was demolished in 1967.
The Metropolitan Opera can house 4 000 spectators. Every year, the Met performs around 300 operas and over 30 world premieres! Since 2006, the Met also streams the performances worldwide in various movie theatres to democratise operas and concerts. An innovative concept!
