What is a musical? 

The musical is a genre that developed mainly in Anglo-Saxon countries and stems from music hall, with burlesque, operetta and opera as distant relatives, as well as cinema. It can be defined as a show in which the story is told through a combination of dialogue, song and choreography, all set against daring stage designs. Musicals take a different musical approach from opera, where vocal technique and orchestral direction form an inseparable whole. In musicals, the music complements the story, reinforcing the emotions of the spoken dialogue. 

What are the most popular musicals? 

The genre of musicals has been shaped by such indisputable talents as Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber and, before them, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Jerome Kern and Cole Porter, to name but a few. Their contributions have given rise to iconic works that have left an indelible mark on the history of musical theatre: "Cats", "Les Misérables", "The Phantom of the Opera", as well as "Chicago" and "West Side Story" by Leonard Bernstein, Jerome Robbins and Stephen Sondheim, the absolute masterpiece of the genre. 

Some musicals are so popular that they have crossed borders and conquered stages the world over. "The Lion King" by Elton John and Tim Rice or "Mamma Mia!" by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus (ABBA) have achieved international success by captivating audiences from all over the world.
