In 1678, Germany's first public opera house, the Hamburgische Staatsoper, was opened here. Hamburg was also the birthplace of Johannes Brahms, who received his musical training as a pianist and composer. Telemann was the director of music for the city of Hamburg in 1721, Handel was employed as a violinist and harpsichordist at the Hamburgische Staatsoper and Gustav Mahler was its musical director for six years from 1891.
The Hamburgische Staatsoper (Hamburg State Opera) with its orchestra the Hamburg Philharmonic is one of the most famous opera houses in the world. The opera house is also home to the Hamburg Ballet, which has been directed by John Neumeier since 1973. The Hamburg Opera is constantly evolving, with many contemporary works and an innovative staging concept that often spills over into the more classical repertoire, surprising many unaccustomed audiences.
A visit to the Elbphilharmonie, an exceptional concert hall that combines spectacular architecture with perfect acoustics, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Speicherstadt, the 'warehouse city', will leave you with unforgettable memories.
