Biography
Daniil Trifonov began his musical studies at the age of five. He soon entered the Gnesin Music School in Moscow in the class of Tatiana Zelikman, who was also the teacher of artists such as Konstantin Lifschitz, Alexander Kobrin and Alexei Volodin. From 2006 to 2009, he took composition lessons and has since written scores for piano, chamber ensemble and orchestra. Since 2009, he has studied piano at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Sergei Babayan.
At only 24 years old, Daniil Trifonov has already distinguished himself as one of the brightest talents of the new generation of pianists. During the 2010-2011 season, he won medals at three of the most prestigious international competitions: the Chopin Competition in Warsaw (3rd prize), the Artur Rubinstein Competition in Tel Aviv (1st prize) and the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (1st prize). Among the jury of these major events, Krystian Zimerman, Van Cliburn, Emanuel Ax, Nelson Freire, Yefim Bronfman, Martha Argerich and Valery Gergiev in particular noted the pianist's exceptional talent. It should also be noted that at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, it was Valery Gergiev himself who presented him with the Grand Prix in all categories of the competition.
Following these resounding successes, Trifonov was invited to perform around the world starting in the 2011-2012 season. Recent triumphant debuts with the Vienna Philharmonic, the London Symphony, the Mariinsky Orchestra with Gergiev, the Israel Philharmonic with Mehta, the Russian National Orchestra with Pletnev, and collaborations with conductors such as Howard Shelley, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Pietari Inkinen, Sir Neville Marriner, Diego Matheuz, and Antoni Wit are to be remembered. He has also given recitals at La Fenice, Salle Pleyel, Carnegie Hall, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Wigmore Hall, the Musikverein in Vienna, and other legendary venues throughout Europe, America, and Asia.

In 2016 he released Transcendental, a double album that, not only was it his third collaboration with Deutsche Grammophon, but also the label’s first album to feature Liszt’s Études in their entirety. Winner of Gramophone’s 2016 Artist of the Year award, he was also nominated for a second Grammy Award for his performance of Rachmaninoff’s Variations, and then played Rachmaninoff again with the Berliner Philharmonic and Sir Simon Rattle during the famous New Year’s Eve concert.
