What can you see in Aix-en-Provence ?

Aix-en-Provence offers a rich cultural heritage. It is the first city founded by the Romans on French territory, before Narbonne. This city is a must-see for any Provence or culture lover. Remember to book your opera tickets for Aix-en-Provence's Festival or the Grand Théâtre de Provence as well as Aix en Provence Easter Festival to enjoy an unforgettable evening filled with music

Short history

Aix-en-Provence was called Aquae Sextius ("Sextius' waters") at the time of its creation. A Roman legion led by Gaius Sextius Calvinus built the town in 122 BC to ensure the safety of merchants travelling between Rome and Massalia (Marseille). The town developed and gained significance over the centuries.

In 1189, the Counts of Provence made the town their new residence. The economy flourished quickly and it became the capital of Provence! During the 15th century, Aix-en-Provence reached its golden age when King René settled there and became a major cultural and academic centre, but also an important economic pole. In 1486, Provence became a part of France and the governor settled into the capital.

Aix is a a unique touristic destination in the heart of Provence and close to the Luberon region.

A little culture

Aix-en-Provence is a major cultural pole: many universities are located there. The law, arts and social science courses are renowned.

Aix-en-Provence is Paul Cézanne's birth city. Provence has inspired many painters: Bonnard, Braque, Chagall, Van Gogh… Emile Zola spent his youth there! The city has the "Villes et Pays d'Art et d'Histoire" (Towns and Lands of Art and History) title.

Do not miss the International Aix-en-Provence Festival which occurs every year in July. This festival is unmissable for any classic music lover!

The festival was founded in 1948 by Gabriel Dussurget. The first opera performance was Mozart's Cosi fan Tutte, along with about ten concerts and recitals in the archbishop's palace's courtyard. Nowadays, the different performances take place in various venues: the archbishop's theatre, the Grand Théâtre de Provence, the Théâtre du Jeu de Paume and the Maynier d'Oppède hostel.

The Grand Théâtre de Provence was built in 2007 in the new Mirabeau-Sextius district. This 20 000m² area with modern architecture is dedicated to music and hosts around 100 performances every year!

Famous artists perform in Aix-en-Provence every season, such as Philippe Jarousky, Hélène Grimmaud, Bryn Terfel, but also Renaud Capuçon who leads the Aix-en-Provence Easter Festival.

What to do in Aix-en-Provence?

This city brings forth all the charm of Provence. Walk along the Cours Mirabeau, the restaurants and small shops will charm you. Do not forget to savour the authentic Calissons d'Aix-en-Provence and its delicious olive oil!

Take the time to visit the beautiful Cathédrale du Saint-Sauveur. The acoustic is incredible: just listen to is two organs! For art lovers, Cézanne's workshop is open to all visitors. A real must-see!

Head to Aix-en-Provence for a journey combining culture and relaxation "à la Provençale". Walk around, visit the monuments which exude Provence. Enjoy a couple of Calissons!

Don't forget to book your opera tickets for the Grand Théâtre and the Aix-en-Provence Opera Festival
