For a regular viewer of the major opera houses, the question may seem absurd. What is a ballet?
The place of dance is very important in the programming of the great lyrical institutions. The major classical ballet companies are often attached to a hall like the Palais Garnier and the Opéra Bastille for the famous Ballet of the Opéra national de Paris or the Royal Ballet at Covent Garden in London. They propose a season with a repertoire well known but also offer new creations. The art of dance is often defined by classical ballet in tutu and point shoes, but this notion is too narrow to embrace the diversity of expressions of choreography. With the white ballet that is the foundation of all the great world companies, the creation feeds each troupe of dancers.
We often recognize the prominence of a dance company thanks to its ability to adapt and especially thanks to its order book. Today's choreographers will make the legends of tomorrow as Rudolph Nureyev, who disappeared too early and whose fame still lingers over many ballets. The subtle choreographic art is not only reserved to dance specialists. As with all performances, opera doors are widely open to those who wish to take the trouble to discover.
Classical dance is the most refined art and also one of the most codified, but the grace mixed with the physical strength of the dancers who make you forget the technique as if by magic. It is worth mentioning the music with the greatest composers who have distinguished themselves in the genre, such as Tchaikovsky or Prokofiev to name only them but also current composers like Philip Glass or Thom Willems who perfectly illustrate contemporary dance.
Many creators trigger the passions. Numerous fans are capable to travel the world to accompany the tour of their favorite dance company or to attend the latest creation of a great choreographer. Dance can cause an incredible rush when you fall for it! With the work of Marius Petipa and the great ballets such as The Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Giselle, Romeo & Juliet, The Bayadère, The Sleeping Beauty or The Rite of Spring with incredible strength, we must mention the legendary choreographers who revolutionized dance. Georges Balanchine, Martha Graham, Maurice Béjart, Pina Bausch, Jerome Robbins, Trisha Brown are among them. Today, the generations succeed each other bringing a personal touch like Anne Teresa of Keersmaeker, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Akram Khan or Wayne McGregor who rub shoulders with the great names of John Neumeier, William Forsythe, Mats Ek, Merce Cunningham or Jiri Kylian. The classic technique has not yet said its last word thanks to Frederick Ashton, Kenneth MacMillan, John Cranko or even Roland Petit. To be complete, we should equally mention Angelin Preljocaj, Sasha Waltz, Paul Taylor, Alvin Ailey and so many others ... that it seems impossible to draw up a finished list.
M & O has the great advantage of being able to offer tickets for major dance companies such as the English National Ballet in London, the Staatsballett Berlin, the New York City Ballet in New York, the Paris Opera Ballet but also the Opera Ballet of Lyon, the Staatsballett of Munich, the Hamburg Ballet and so many other great companies.
