Genoa is a city of art but also an industrial city with the largest port in Italy. It is a city full of contrasts, where you can admire the expanse of the sea from Castelletto or Mount Righi, or the very intimate streets with coloured facades and the black of the slate.
Genoa has always been a "gateway" of civilizations, between East and West, between the Mediterranean and Europe. Allied with the Romans against Carthage, it was sacked by Hannibal's brother Magon. In the year 1000, the city became a powerful maritime republic and in 1528 the Republic of Genoa reached the peak of its greatness. You only have to walk along Via Garibaldi to realise this. In the twentieth century Genoa became one of the main industrial centres of Northern Italy.
In 2004, Genoa was named "European Capital of Culture", and in 2006 the Palazzi dei Rolli, 42 of them, and Via Garibaldi (formerly Strada Nuova or Via Aurea) were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Teatro Carlo Felice is located in the heart of the historic centre of Genoa, linking the Galleria Mazzini to Piazza de Ferrari, the city's main square. Over the years, the Teatro Carlo Felice has hosted the most important orchestras in the world with the greatest conductors, prestigious ballet companies and international performers. The Teatro Carlo Felice has its own orchestra and choir of the highest artistic level and has hosted the world's greatest conductors.
If you are a music lover, let yourself be tempted by an evening at the Carlo Felice.
