Biography
Born in the United States but naturalized as a Canadian, Sondra Radvanovsky won the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 1995. A member of the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, she performed Antonia in The Tales of Hoffmann on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Her career then took off internationally.
She is considered one of the greatest Verdian interpreters of our time. In addition to Leonora in Il Trovatore (her signature role), she has performed Aida, Elvira in Ernani, Luisa Miller, Elena in Vespers Siciliana, Lina in Stiffelio, Elisabetta in Don Carlo, Amelia in Le Bal Maschera on the great international opera stages (Covent Garden in London, Scala in Milan, Vienna Staatsoper, Lyric Opera in Chicago, San Francisco Opera). Other roles that have marked her career include the title roles in Rusalka, Lucrezia Borgia, Manon Lescaut and Tosca, Roxanne in Alfano’s Cyrano de Bergerac, Donizetti’s “three queens”: the title roles in Anna Bolena and Maria Stuarda and Elisabetta by Roberto Devereux.
She made her debut as Norma in the 2011/2012 season at the Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo and has since sung it at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the San Francisco Opera, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. She recently took on the role of Amelia in Simon Boccanegra at the Monte Carlo Opera and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées.
