Biography
Sabine Devieilhe, originally from Normandy, initially studied cello and musicology. In parallel with her training as a singer at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris, the young coloratura soprano was already working with the ensembles Pygmalion – Raphaël Pichon and Les Cris de Paris – Geoffroy Jourdain. She also quickly performed in concerts, notably with the Orchestre de Paris, Les Arts Florissants but also with Les Musiciens du Louvre – Marc Minkowski and Le Concert Spirituel – Hervé Niquet. It was under the direction of Jean-Claude Malgoire that she sang for the first time Amina in Bellini’s LA SONNAMBULA and La Folie in Rameau’s PLATÉE.
Shortly after completing her studies, Sabine Devieilhe was invited to the Aix-en-Provence Festival to perform Serpetta in Mozart’s LA FINTA GIARDINIERA, but also to Montpellier for the title role in LAKMÉ by Léo Delibes and to Lyon for her debut as the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s THE MAGIC FLUTE. In addition, she was awarded at the 20th Victoires de la Musique ceremony in 2013 in the “Révélation Artiste Lyrique” category.
Since then, she has been heard in Lyon, Paris and Amsterdam in the role of Sister Constance in Poulenc’s opera LES DIALOGUES DES CARMÉLITES. She was triumphantly performed at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, but also in Toulon, Avignon and Marseille for her title role in LAKMÉ by Léo Delibes. Sabine Devieilhe triumphed at the Paris Opera as the Queen of the Night in the new production of Mozart’s THE MAGIC FLUTE directed by Robert Carsen and the public was also able to admire her in Berlioz’s BÉATRICE ET BÉNÉDICT. She then took on roles such as Eurydice in Gluck’s ORPHÉE ET EURYDICE at La Monnaie in Brussels, Adèle in Johann Strauss’s DIANE MOUSE at the Opéra-Comique, Mélisande in Debussy’s PELLEAS ETMÉLISANDE, and Nanetta in Verdi’s FALSTAFF at the Opéra de Marseille. Her debut at the Glyndebourne Festival with the roles of Le Feu, La Princesse and Le Rossignol in Ravel’s L’ENFANT ET LES SORTILÈGES was also crowned with success. Sabine Devieilhe has also performed in concert with the Orchestre de Paris at the Philharmonie de Paris and with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Stockholm, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen.
She has had many other successes, notably at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées as Ismène in a new production of Mozart’s MITRIDATE, as well as in the role of Amina in a concert version of Bellini’s LA SONNAMBULA. These successes continued in the summer of 2016 when she played Bellezza in the new production of Händel’s IL TRIONFODEL TEMPO E DEL DISINGANNO directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. With her debuts as Blonde in Mozart’s DIE ENLEVEMENT AU SERAIL at La Scala in Milan, or as Queen of the Night in Mozart’s DIE MAGIC FLUTE or Marie in Donizetti’s DIE FILLE DU REGIMENT at the Zurich Opernhaus and the Vienna State Opera, she has been as much appreciated by the public as by the press. The summer of 2018 also marked her debut as Zerbinetta in a new production of ARIANE ON NAXOS at the Aix-en-Provence Festival; her debut in Mozart’s arias was also highly acclaimed at the Salzburg Festival in Austria.
In recital, Sabine Devieilhe regularly appears alongside Anne Le Bozec in Paris, at the Aix-en-Provence and Auvers-sur-Oise Festivals, in Lyon, New York and at the Wigmore Hall in London.
