What shows are to see in Ghent this season?

Ghent, a port city in the northwest of Belgium, has a rich history and thriving culture. Its pedestrianised centre is known for its medieval architecture, such as the 12th-century Castle of the Counts and the Graslei, a row of guild houses near the port on the river Leie.

As the capital of the former county of Flanders, a large cloth and trading city, and later the birthplace of Charles V, it experienced a period of economic and cultural blossoming from the 12th century onwards, and even more so from the 14th to 16th centuries. Ghent has preserved a rich architectural heritage from this period, which is reflected in the city centre.

In addition, Ghent is nowadays animated by an important cultural life. The Ghent opera house is today an integral part, together with the Antwerp opera house, of the Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, a Flemish public institution created in 1996 following the merger, decided in 1981, of the two opera houses that existed at the time in Flanders, Antwerp and Ghent.
