GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG, THE APOTHEOSIS OF THE WAGNERIAN TETRALOGY
Götterdämmerung, composed by Richard Wagner in 1874, is the last part of the tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen. This three-act opera closes the monumental cycle with a tragic and epic conclusion. The title, meaning "Twilight of the Gods", announces the end of the world of the gods and the decline of the heroes in a whirlwind of destruction and revelations.
Götterdämmerung is a work of unparalleled emotional and dramatic intensity. Wagner's music, rich in leitmotifs and orchestral innovations, creates a grandiose and tragic atmosphere. The opera explores profound themes such as fate, corrupting power, and redemption through sacrifice.
THE STORY
The plot takes place after the events of the previous Ring operas, and follows the final struggle for power and redemption. Siegfried, the central hero, is betrayed by Hagen, the son of the horrible Alberich, who seeks to seize the cursed ring. Manipulated by the forces of evil and jealousy, Siegfried loses his memory and betrays Brünnhilde, the woman he loves. Brünnhilde, furious and desperate, discovers the betrayal and, in a final act of sacrifice, resolves to end the age of the gods by setting the world ablaze with a purifying fire.
