The Teatro Regio in Turin is one of the oldest opera theatres in the world still in operation: its origins date back to 1740, when it was inaugurated as a magnificent performance venue for the court of the House of Savoy. Designed by the architect Benedetto Alfieri according to innovative criteria, it soon became one of the stages of the great tours of the time. After almost two centuries of uninterrupted performances, the old building, an Italian-style theatre with five tiers of boxes, was destroyed by a violent fire on the night of 8-9 February 1936.
Despite the fire, the Regio continued to be programmed in other theatres in the city until the present building was opened. Unique in the world for its design, it was realized thanks to the genius of architect Carlo Mollino and inaugurated in 1973 with Verdi's I Vespri siciliani, in a unique staging by Maria Callas and Giuseppe Di Stefano.
