The Teatro Regio in Turin is one of the oldest active opera theaters in the world: its origins date back to 1740, when it was inaugurated as a magnificent venue for performances at the court of the House of Savoy. Designed by the architect Benedetto Alfieri according to innovative criteria, it soon became one of the stops on the grand tours of the time. After almost two centuries of uninterrupted performances, the old building, an Italian-style theater with five orders of boxes, was destroyed by a violent fire on the night between February 8 and 9, 1936.

Despite the fire, the Regio's program continued in other theaters in the city until the opening of the current building. Unique in the world for its design, it was realized thanks to the genius of the architect Carlo Mollino and inaugurated in 1973 with Verdi's "I Vespri siciliani," in the unique staging by Maria Callas and Giuseppe Di Stefano.
