In Piazza Verdi, in the centre of Palermo, stands the Teatro Massimo, one of the most important theatres in Europe, admired for its beauty and perfect acoustics. This splendid neoclassical building, built at the end of the 19th century, has become a symbol of Palermo: for lovers of opera and ballet, it is a must-see.
The construction of the theatre by the Palermo architect Giovan Battista Filippo Basile began in 1875; after his death, the work continued under the direction of his son Ernesto. On 16 May 1867, the theatre was officially inaugurated with Verdi's Falstaff, which was performed in Palermo for the first time. From 1974 to 1997 the theatre was closed for renovation and the show chosen for its reopening was a concert by the Berliner Philharmonic conducted by Franco Mannino and Claudio Abbado.
The horseshoe-shaped main hall attracts music lovers from all over the world for its perfect acoustics. Opera and concert tickets should be booked in advance to attend a performance at the famous Teatro Massimo.
