Planning de la tournée de l'artiste William Christie
Conductor

William Christie

William Christie, harpsichordist, conductor, musicologist and teacher, is the inspiration behind one of the most exciting musical adventures of the last twenty-five years.

His pioneering work has led to a renewed appreciation of Baroque music in France, notably of 17th- and 18th-century French repertoire, which he has introduced to a very wide audience.

Born in Buffalo (New York State), William Christie studied at Harvard and Yale Universities, and has lived in France since 1971. The major turning point in his career came in 1979 when he founded Les Arts Florissants. As Director of this vocal and instrumental ensemble, Christie soon made his mark as a musician and man of the theatre, in both the concert hall and the opera house, with new interpretations of largely neglected or forgotten repertoire. Major public recognition came in 1987 with the production of Atys by Lully at the Opéra Comique in Paris, which then went on to tour internationally with much success.

Biography

William Christie is the founder and co-musical director of Les Arts Florissants. Harpsichordist, conductor, musicologist and teacher, he played a pioneering role in the rediscovery of baroque music by revealing the French repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries to a wide audience. American by birth, living in France since 1971, his career took a decisive turn when he created Les Arts Florissants in 1979. At the head of this instrumental and vocal ensemble, he imposed his personal style in concert as well as on the lyric stage.

It was in 1987 that he achieved true consecration with Atys by Lully at the Opéra Comique, then in the greatest international venues. From Charpentier to Rameau, via Couperin and Mondonville, William Christie is the undisputed master of tragédielyrique, opéra-ballet, French motet and court music. An attachment to French music that does not prevent him from also exploring the repertoires of Monteverdi, Rossi, Purcell, Handel, Mozart, Haydn or Bach. Among his recent lyrical productions, we can mention in 2018 Handel’s Jephtha and Ariodante, respectively at the Paris Opera and the Vienna Staatsoper, as well as John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera at the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord and Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea at the Salzburg Festival. As a guest conductor, he regularly conducts orchestras such as the Berliner Philharmoniker or the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, on stages such as the Glyndebourne Festival, the Metropolitan Opera, or the Zurich Opernhaus. His discography includes over a hundred recordings, the latest of which – La Messe en si, “Si vous vouliez un jour” and L’incoronazione di Poppea – were published in the “Les Arts Florissants” collection by harmonia mundi.

Keen to further his work as a trainer, he founded the Académie du Jardin des Voix in 2002. Since 2007, he has been an artist in residence at the Juilliard School of Music in New York, where he gives masterclasses twice a year. In 2021, he launched the first masterclasses at the Quartier des Artistes (Thiré, Vendée – Pays de la Loire) for young professional musicians with Les Arts Florissants. In 2012, he created the Dans les Jardins de William Christie festival in Thiré, where he brought together Les Arts Florissants, his students from the Juilliard School and the winners of the Jardin des Voix. In 2018, he donated his entire estate to the William Christie Foundation – Les Arts Florissants. A regular guest at the Opéra Comique since 2007, he has notably directed Zampa by Hérold, Dido and Aeneas by Purcell, Atys by Lully (recreation of the 1987 production in 2011), David et Jonathas by Charpentier and Les Fêtes vénitiennes by Campra.
