The Opéra de Lyon is one of the leading lights of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Formerly known as the "Grand Théâtre", it was built in 1756 by Jacques-Germain Soufflot and rebuilt between 1827 and 1831 by architects Chenavard and Pollet. It was rebuilt between 1989 and 1993 within the walls of the 1st opera house, of which architect Jean Nouvel retained only the facades and the public foyer. The addition of a dome and the excavation of a basement tripled its surface area.

The Lyon Auditorium was built between 1972 and 1975 by Henri Pottier, Grand Prix de Rome, and renovated in 1993. Over 160 concerts a season are held there, including symphonic concerts, recitals, world music and more.
