The Opéra Bastille is offering a very rich new 2022-2023 season in Paris. Alexander Neef, the new director of the Opéra national de Paris, is asserting his choices by appointing Gustavo Dudamel as musical director, who is already admired by all.

For the ballet, it is rather at the Palais Garnier that we will admire the great titles such as Mayerling or L'Histoire de Manon and that we will applaud the magnificent choreographers of the season, Pina Bausch, George Balanchine, Kenneth MacMillan or Wayne McGregor.

And yet, the great stage of the Opéra Bastille hosts the absolute masterpiece of white ballet, Swan Lake by Rudolf Nureyev, an ideal show to see at least once in your life. Two other emblematic ballets will be seen here, such as Ravel's Bolero in an evening devoted to the genius Maurice Béjart and Signes, a superb aesthetic achievement by Carolyn Carlson and Olivier Debré.

For once, Bastille welcomes an orchestra from another great foreign opera house. The Orquestra Simfònica del Gran Teatre del Liceu de Barcelona led by its conductor José Pons accompanies two great artists, Iréne Theorin and Bryn Terfel, who interpret the heroes of Bartók's Bluebeard's Castle in a landmark concert version.

One of the hallmarks of this new season of the Paris Opera are the guest conductors. Among them is the welcome return of Simone Young. The conductor who led Strauss's Salome and then Speranza Scappucci illuminates the magnificent revival of Bellini's I Capuleti e i Montecchi in the production of Robert Carsen.

Thomas Hengelbrock, who is rather used to the baroque repertoire in Paris, comes to defend Ambroise Thomas' Hamlet.

Among the conductors to watch closely, Antonello Manacorda, a fine Mozartian, conducts the revival of The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte) by the divine Mozart in another very successful staging by Robert Carsen.

Gustavo Dudamel has really taken the reins of this season. His repertoire extends to contemporary creations (the ballet The Dante Project, at the Palais Garnier to the music of Thomas Adès) and the modern and indispensable Nixon in China by John Adams.

Along with Puccini's Tosca, it is undoubtedly Wagner's Tristan und Isolde that is most eagerly awaited. One of the most beautiful productions of the Opéra Bastille by Peter Sellars & Bill Viola is back with a new cast of singers little known in France. Russell Thomas in Verdi's La forza del destino will be a revelation.

The great voices are present,Anna Netrebko is Leonora in Verdi's La forza del destino, Pretty Yende plays two roles (Pamina and Juliet), Joseph Calleja and Bryn Terfel share the bill in Tosca, as do two other great stars, Renée Fleming and Thomas Hampson, who return this time in Nixon in China. Karita Mattila, who has also graced the stage of the Opéra national de Paris, returns as Herodias in Salome.

Ludovic Tézier, one of the greatest baritones of his generation, is a regular at the Bastille but this time he plays Thomas' Hamlet alongside Lisette Oropesa as Ophelia, a major highlight of the season. Opera tickets are going fast in Paris.

Benjamin Bernheim and Elsa Dreisig are Gounod's Romeo and Juliet (also with Florian Sempey) while Julie Fuchs and Marianne Crebassa play the same characters in Bellini's masterpiece I Capuleti e i Montecchi.

Two exceptional Carmens are announced, Gaëlle Arquez and Clémentine Margaine opposite Joseph Calleja and the sensational Michael Spyres.

Tickets for the Opéra Bastille should be booked quickly to get the best seats. Other performers include Léa Desandre, Gerald Finley, Nicole Car, Etienne Dupuis and many others.

it's time to book tickets for the 2022-2023 season at the Opéra national de Paris, which promises to be a truly great one.
