LOHENGRIN, THE EPIC OF ROMANTIC OPERA
Composed in 1850 by Richard Wagner, Lohengrin is an opera in three acts that stands out as one of the masterpieces of the German Romantic repertoire.
With a libretto written by Wagner himself, the work is an epic exploration of medieval legend, combining mythology, love and mystery. First performed in Weimar, Lohengrin is famous for its iconic musical motifs, including the famous ‘Knight's Air’ and the majestic prelude.
Set in a mythical medieval period, the story follows the arrival of a mysterious knight, Lohengrin, who comes to the aid of Elsa of Brabant, wrongly accused of murder. As Elsa's protector and suitor, Lohengrin fights evil and restores order, but he imposes one condition: Elsa must never ask him his name or where he comes from. When Elsa's curiosity gets the better of her and she breaks this promise, Lohengrin must leave the kingdom, revealing the tragedy of their impossible love.
Through rich orchestration and ambitious vocal writing, Wagner creates a musical universe of great emotional and symbolic depth. Lohengrin is characterised by sweeping orchestral flights and recurring motifs that add an extra dimension to the narrative.
