Eugene Onegin is the most famous opera by Russian master Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Since its premiere in 1879, the work has lost none of its popularity and remains one of the most performed operas in the world today. Inspired by the verse novels of Konstantin Chlovsky and the poems of Pushkin, this work is a symbol of Russian lyricism. Its music evokes in a sombre manner the torments of a young aristocrat who, through pride, loses the two people dearest to him.

THE STORY

Mrs. Larina lives with her two daughters, the cheerful Olga and the romantic Tatiana, on a country estate near Saint Petersburg. Visitors arrive unexpectedly. They are Lenski, Olga's fiancé, and Eugene Onegin, a dandy from Saint Petersburg. That evening, finding herself alone in her room, Tatiana, immediately seduced, decides to write a passionate letter to her new friend. Onegin agrees to visit her, only to reply curtly that he is not cut out for marriage. Tatiana is devastated...
