La Sonnambula

Approximate running time

LA SONNAMBULA, AN OPERA SEMISERIA

This opera, translated in English to 'The Sleepwalker', is in two acts with music composed by Vincenzo Bellini. The opera premiered in Milan at the Teatro Carcano on 6th March 1831, and in London at the King's Theatre on 28th July 1831.

The main female role of Amina is renowned for being a difficult part, with high notes and an excellent technique required. La Sonnambula was immediately popular and is still regularly performed today. Although this opera is not part of the standard repertoire, it is still performed frequently, and in 2011 it was produced in London by the Royal Opera House.

HISTORY

The opera is set in Italy in a village with a mill.

Act 1

The proprietress of the inn, Lisa, is jealous of the betrothal procession of Amina and Elvino as she herself was one betrothed to Elvino. Amina thanks her friends and family, and particularly Teresa who is her foster mother and adopted her as an orphan. Elvino arrives after visiting his mother's grave and he gives Amina his mother's ring. A stranger arrives in the village asking the way to the castle. Lisa explains it is too late to reach it and offers him a room at the inn. He admires Amina who reminds him of a girl he once loved. Elvino is jealous that the stranger admires Amina. Teresa explains that the lord's son is said to have disappeared years ago but the stranger assures her he is alive. He is warned to go to bed because of a village phantom that walks at night. Lisa tells the stranger that someone has recognised him as the lost son, Rodolfo. As she leaves she drops a handkerchief. Amina enters sleep walking and Rodolfo realises it is this that has caused the rumours of a phantom. He refrains from taking advantage of her and sees her innocence. She falls asleep on the sofa and Rodolfo goes outside to meet the villagers welcoming their long lost lord. Elvino rejects Amina, believing she has been faithless. It is only Teresa who believes Amina is innocent.

Act 2

Even when Count Rodolfo defends her innocence Elvino continues to reject Amina and he takes back the ring. Elvino then decides to marry Lisa but Rodolfo meets them on the way to the church and explains that Amina is a somnambulist; a sleepwalker. Teresa confronts Lisa and produces the handkerchief. Elvino demands proof and Amina then is seen sleepwalking on the dangerous mill bridge. When she wakes she finds herself in Elvino's arms to everyone's happiness.
