Opened in 1911, the Erkel Theatre in Budapest, built on the site of the former People's Opera House, is the largest auditorium in Hungary. With a current capacity of 1,800 spectators, it is the second largest opera house in Hungary. It operated as an independent entity until 1951, when it was annexed to the State Opera. Numerous renovations to the hall have changed the original design, but this hall is intended to be a more universally accessible venue for opera, concert and ballet performances as well as for musicals.
