Leipzig, the city of Bach par excellence, remains one of Europe's great musical capitals. Its churches, concert halls and historic streets still bear the imprint of the Cantor of St Thomas, while the Bachfest celebrates this remarkable heritage each year through a living dialogue with the masterpieces of the repertoire. Blending spiritual devotion, German elegance and cultural vitality, the city provides the perfect setting for a journey devoted entirely to voices, passions and the great musical tradition.
The programme begins with Mozart's Mass in C minor, followed by an evening dedicated to Anna Magdalena Bach, a musical chronicle brought to life by Julia Lezhneva and Ton Koopman. The St Matthew Passion, the central thread of this edition, will then be presented in Mendelssohn's version, performed by the Opera Fuoco Orchestra under the direction of David Stern. The journey continues with Handel's Messiah performed by the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir conducted by Ton Koopman, before culminating in Bach's St Matthew Passion, this time conducted by Sir Simon Rattle with the Freiburger Barockorchester, Magdalena Kožená and Reinoud Van Mechelen. In between, Julian Prégardien and Els Biesemans will immerse you in the deeply moving intimacy of Schubert's Die schöne Müllerin and Winterreise.
A journey into the very soul of Leipzig's musical heritage.
