ADRIANA LECOUVREUR, A MOVING TRAGEDY
Adriana Lecouvreur is an opera in four acts composed by Francesco Cilea. It was first performed in November 1902 at the Teatro Lirico in Milan and is based on the 18th-century play Adrienne Lecouvreur.
The play itself is loosely based on the life of French actress Adrienne Lecouvreur, although the plot is fictional and highly dramatised. There are at least three other adaptations of the play, but Cilea's is by far the best known.
HISTORY
The story takes place in Paris at the beginning of the 17th century. The plot deals with the fatal love triangle involving the actress Adriana, the Count of Saxony, Maurizio and the Princess of Bouillon. Although the plot is fictional, the work is often presented as a verismo opera. The role of Adriana, which requires great technical skill, has been performed by some of the greatest singers, including Magda Olivero.
