La Bayadère

LA BAYADÈRE, THE TRIUMPH OF ROMANTIC BALLET

Listen to the Music & Opera playlist :

La Bayadère is a ballet in four acts composed in 1877 by Ludwig Minkus, with original choreography by Marius Petipa. This masterpiece of the classical repertoire is one of the most emblematic creations of Romantic ballet. First performed at the Bolshoi Kamenny Theatre in St Petersburg, La Bayadère is often hailed as one of the pinnacles of nineteenth-century ballet. This masterly work is both a celebration of the narrative style of ballet and a dazzling demonstration of classical technique.

The plot of La Bayadère is set in mythical India and tells the tragic story of a forbidden love between Nikiya, a temple dancer (la bayadère), and Solor, a noble warrior. Broken promises, jealousy and revenge are at the heart of this story, where the sacred and the profane meet in a whirlwind of passions. Petipa's complex choreography, combined with Minkus's spellbinding music, make La Bayadère an essential work of classical ballet, where dreams and reality merge in a fresco that is both grandiose and poignant.
