Details on the Performance

Rigoletto is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi; its libretto was written by Francesco Maria Piave. It had a triumphant premiere at the La Fenice Theatre in Venice, on March 11th 1851.

Rigoletto is an intense drama about passion, treachery, filial love and vengeance. The tragedy of Rigoletto revolves around the ‘curse’, which causes the inexorable and tragic fall of the main character: ‘The whole subject is in that curse, which will also prove to be moral’ (G. Verdi). The first act of the opera begins in the Tiepolo Hall, where Anthony Knight’s wonderful costumes, inspired by the 18th century style, blend perfectly into the magnificent Baroque Palace furnishings.

Rigoletto travels and unfolds throughout the halls of the Palace where the choice to use candlelight creates a Caravaggio-style backlighting which enhances the dramatic power of the Opera.

Part of Verdi's popular trilogy (along with Rigoletto and Il Trovatore), La Traviata is now one of the most performed operas in the world. A true romantic drama that struck a chord with audiences from the moment of its premiere, the work is a cultural monument of the world's musical heritage. The lyrical flights of Verdi's opera owe their renown to such talented performers as Maria Callas, Renata Scotto, Ileana Cotrubas, Monserrat Caballé and, more recently, Angela Gheorghiu, Patrizia Ciofi, Anna Netrebko and Diana Damrau.

Set in Paris around 1850, the play tells the story of the love affair between a courtesan, Violetta Valéry, and a young man from a bourgeois family, Alfredo Germont. Madly in love with each other, Violetta goes so far as to give up her social life for Alfredo. Furious that his son is tarnishing his family's reputation, Father Germont urges Violetta to sacrifice her love. In a state of complete idleness, Violetta, seriously ill with tuberculosis, will not survive this heartbreak.
