A must-see opera by the divine Mozart, where the characters of Countess and Count Almaviva, Suzanna, Figaro and, of course, the intrepid Cherubino, have long since entered the pantheon of operatic art as the most beautiful operatic characters ever drawn.
Le Nozze di Figaro is one of Mozart's best-known operas. The librettist, Da Ponte, was inspired by the plot of Beaumarchais' Marriage of Figaro. Mozart's opera retains the light-hearted atmosphere of a sentimental comedy, but the libretto tends to tone down the social criticism of Beaumarchais' play.
The fact remains, however, that Le Nozze di Figaro illustrates both an aristocracy clinging to its privileges and an astute Third Estate seeking to survive. This work marks the beginning of a major collaboration between Mozart and Da Ponte.
THE STORY
The action takes place in Count Almaviva's castle, as the servants Figaro and Susanna prepare for their forthcoming nuptials, and he seeks to exercise his droit de cuissage. The Countess, tired of her husband's infidelities, must confront his fierce jealousy. Amorous intrigues involving the page Cherubino, the scheming Marcellina and the Count's attraction to Susanna nearly derail Figaro's nuptials.
