Biography
Anja Harteros grew up in a family that loved classical music. She took singing lessons at a very early age. Her teacher, Wilhelm Welp, noticed her talent and recommended her for a professional career. At the age of 14, she began professional opera training under the direction of Astrid Huber-Aulman. It was not until the age of 25 that she went on stage to sing the greatest roles in Mozart's repertoire, such as The Countess in The Marriage of Figaro and Fiodiligi in the opera Cosi fan Tutte. She stood out for her sensitivity and her powerful and accurate voice. In 1999, she won the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World, the first award given to a German woman. She was then recognized in the opera world and was given the great roles of renowned composers, such as Mozart, Verdi and Wagner. She has been invited to all the major opera houses in the world, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, as well as Vienna, London, Frankfurt, Paris, Boston, Florence and even Tel Aviv. There she has performed Verdi's greatest roles, in Othello, Die Forseen, Requiem Mass, Il Trovatore and Don Carlo. In 2005, at the Munich Opera Festival, she sang the title role in a production of Handel's Alcina.
Her lyrical repertoire is varied. She has played, in particular, the roles of Desdemona in Otello, Micaëla in Carmen, Mimi in La Bohème, Alice Ford in Falstaff... CD or DVD recordings of the lyrical singer are rare. She can be heard on CD performing Mozart, Heyden, La Traviata, Verdi's Requiem, as well as Richard Strauss. Only four opera recordings on DVD exist. We can admire him in Mozart's Idomeneo during a performance in Salzburg, in Handel's Alcina during a performance in Vienna, in Verdi's Simon Boccanegra during a performance in Milan and finally in the unmissable Lohengrin performed in Munich singing alongside Jonas Kaufmann.
