Vienna, the undisputed capital of classical music, celebrates Beethoven Year in 2027, honouring one of the composers who left an indelible mark on the city’s history. From imperial palaces and Baroque architecture to historic cafés and prestigious museums, Vienna invites you to discover its extraordinary cultural and musical heritage.
A visit to the Kunsthistorisches Museum, home to masterpieces by Bruegel, Rubens, Rembrandt, Vermeer and Velázquez, opens the stay, followed by a private walking tour tracing the footsteps of Beethoven and the great composers who shaped Vienna’s musical identity, from Strauss and Bruckner to Schubert, Haydn and Mozart.
Two outstanding musical evenings punctuate this immersion. At the Theater an der Wien, intimately connected with Beethoven’s history and the creation of Leonore, the work returns to the stage in a production by Stefan Herheim, conducted by Giedrė Šlekytė, with Julia Kleiter in the title role and Attilio Glaser as Florestan. The following evening, the Musikverein presents Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust in concert version, performed by the Frankfurt Radio Symphony under the baton of Alain Altinoglu, with Angela Brower, Charles Castronovo and John Relyea among the featured soloists.
