Ravenna, a superb town in Emilia-Romagna, is renowned for its rich historical and artistic heritage. Former capital of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century, then centre of the Ostrogothic kingdom and Byzantine Italy, it is home to some marvellous early Christian monuments listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. What makes these buildings so famous are the rich mosaics, exceptional examples of Byzantine art. Ravenna, where the poet Dante Alighieri is buried, combines history and culture with its proximity to the Adriatic Sea. The city offers visitors a unique experience.
The Ravenna Festival, a major cultural event, offers its rich Autumn Trilogy with three masterpieces by Handel. Orlando and Alcina in iconic stagings by the great theatre-maker Pier Luigi Pizzi, and in option the celebrated Messiah. Passing through the evocative streets of Ravenna, we will visit the main UNESCO monuments of Ravenna: Basilica of San Vitale, Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, Basilica of Sant'A'Pollinaire Nuevo, Neonian Baptistery, including a stop on the theme of Dante in the Zone of Silence.

Meet the guide in front of the ticket office at Palazzo Guiccioli. We will take an inside tour of the rooms where Lord Byron lived through one of the most intense chapters of his life: his love for Teresa Gamba Guiccioli and his political involvement in the movement for Italian independence. Original memorabilia, historical settings and multimedia will help us retrace the poet's links with Ravenna and the role of the palace in the Risorgimento.
