For wine lovers everywhere, Beaune in Burgundy not only conjures up a host of delights, but also a wonderful page in French history. The Hospices de Beaune, a masterpiece of medieval architecture, is as famous as the famous wine market. The capital of Burgundy wines, Beaune boasts prestigious cellars and a refined gastronomy to be savoured along its picturesque streets. Every year, music lovers flock to this town of art and history to attend the International Baroque Opera Festival, a veritable institution and one of the most exciting events of the musical summer.
The weekend devoted to the genius composers Bach and Rameau (both born within two years of each other) boasts a most exciting line-up. Few baroque music festivals bring together the finest vocal and instrumental artists each season. Olivier Fortin conducts Rameau's Pygmalion (with Cyril Auvity and Judith van Wanroij among others), while Dardanus, the great and thrilling masterpiece, is performed by Camille Poul, Marie Perbost, Thomas Dolié and Reinoud Van Mechelen. The perfect tenor is also a captivating conductor, leading Bach's St John Passion with a host of superb voices. With harpsichordists Lucie Chabart and Baptiste Guittet offering a transcription of Platée directed by Timothée Gasselin, a host of events await festival-goers, including dinners, a private guided tour and, of course, a few glasses of wine from the Hospices de Beaune!
