Synopsis

Il Trovatore

Listen to the Music & Opera playlist :

Yet Verdi, accustomed to very successful arias, certainly wrote in this Il Trovatore the most elegant and beautiful pages of all his operas. Between the valiant part of the tenor and the elegiac arias of the soprano, the composer portrays unforgettable characters.

The opera in four acts, on a libretto by Salvatore Cammarano, is inspired by the successful Spanish drama by Antonio Garcia Gutiérrez, El trovador. Created on January 19, 1853 at the Teatro Apollo in Rome, it quickly acquired immense popularity. It was such a success that the director of the Paris Opera commissioned Verdi to write a French version. This new score with a ballet in the style of a Grand Opera, was performed for the first time at La Monnaie in Brussels and then in Paris, in the Salle Le Peletier, on January 12, 1857. Today, the original Italian version has established itself on international stages.

This major work demands a remarkable performance from the singers who interpret complex and contrasting characters. Verdi's vocal writing highlights his immense maturity as a lyrical and romantic dramatist.
