Synopsis

Tosca

Listen to the Music & Opera playlist :

Along with La Boheme and Madama Butterfly, Tosca is Puccini's most famous opera,
First performed in Rome in 1900, the work has been a favourite with audiences ever since. Its heroic tone, historical setting and exuberant musical invention, with over 60 original themes, have all contributed to its success.

The musical motifs run through the work like leitmotifs, serving to characterise the characters and situations. With its own seductive charm, the work is a flamboyant success, entirely characteristic of Puccini's musical writing.

The action takes place in Rome in June 1800. The city is suffering under the tyranny of a regime that relies on the secret police of the sinister Scarpia. A group of rebels is seeking to re-establish the Roman Republic, established in 1798 by the French. The painter Mario Caravadossi and the singer Floria Tosca are drawn unwillingly into the tragic events that will lead them to tragedy.
