Details on the Performance

This work, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s most famous opera by far, is also his most enigmatic. Prince Tamino falls in love with Pamina after only having seen a picture of her. But as her mother, the Queen of the Night, reports, Pamina is being held captive by Sarastro. At the queen’s behest, Tamino and his companion Papageno set off to free Pamina from Sarastro’s temple. But as soon as they arrive there, the question of which characters are good and which are evil arises. The only thing that seems clear is that Pamina returns Tamino’s affections, and in the end the two of them are united after difficult trials.


For 25 years, August Everding’s production of »The Magic Flute« has enchanted Staatsoper audiences of all ages. But now the time has come for Mozart’s complex masterpiece to be examined anew. And so American director Yuval Sharon carries away audiences to new worlds of images that are no less imaginative, yet aesthetically quite different from the previous production. At the heart of the production is the idea of a collage, analogous to that of Mozart’s music itself, oscillating constantly between the stylistic levels of the Singspiel and the opera seria. Sharon, together with stage designer Mimi Lien and Belgian fashion designer Walter Van Beirendonck, takes this variety as an occasion to approach Mozart’s opera in a creatively playful and above all colourful way.

The Venue's History in few words …

When the opera house situated on the Lindenallee was inaugurated in 1742, Frederick the Great intended to turn it into the cultural symbol of his ideal capital, the hub of the "Forum Fridericianum." This "enchanted palace," as the enlightened despot called it, is one of the rare vestiges of the old city still visible today, and a large part of German musics cultural heritage is contained within its walls. The Berlin Staatskapelle, for example, the orchestra connected with the opera, was founded in 1570 and the list of its permanent conductors includes names such as those of Meyerbeer, Mendelssohn, Richard Strauss, Furtwangler, Klemperer and Karajan! During the 19th century, the Berlin Opera remained a royal opera, where Weber's FREISCHUTZ was premiered. The activities of the Berlin Staatskapelle developed under Spontini's responsability, the first "Preussischer Generalmusikdirektor," ever appointed. This goes to show the importance of the ensemble in German musical life at that time, an importance which constantly grew, especially after the "Sinfonie-Soireen" were created in 1842, open to the public by subscription.

 

In 1919, the Royal Opera became a state opera, and played an active role in the exhuberant artistic activity that rocked Germany during the twenties: Erich Kleiber presented Berg's WOZZECK and popular harmonies of composers such as Kurt Weill resounded in this shrine of the lyrical repertoire, until Nazism cut short a period of intense creativity. During the war, Karajan forged his reputation in the theatre, until bombs destroyed the building, partially in 1941, and completely in 1945.

 

Because of its geographical situation, the Staatsoper became, in 1949, the Opera of East Berlin. In 1955, the East German administration reinstalled the company in its illustrious hall, rebuilt along the original plans, and one could soon applaud singers such as Peter Schreier and Theo Adam on its stage, musicians who helped create a truly Eastern German singing tradition.

 

Since the German reunification, the institution has been completely reorganized, especially under the impetus of Daniel Barenboim, who became its General Music Director in 1992. Proud of its impressive history, the present day Opera Unter den Linden hardly neglects its baroque beginnings, and it henceforth counts amongst those that most often produce pre-Mozartian lyrical works, such as CLEOPATRA E CESARE by Graun which opened the Opera's first season in 1742. But the house also commissions works by Pierre Boulez, while defending the traditional repertoire, in which Wagner occupies a large place. By thus juxtaposing tradition and innovation, the Opera Unter den Linden has become one of the institutions most representative of Berlin's new dynamism.

Synopsis

Die Zauberflöte

The Magic Flute, or La Flûte enchantée by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is a charming and magical escapade in which good battles the dark forces and ultimately triumphs. Moreover, it is a tale of love, courage and persistence. This singspiel was the last opera that Mozart wrote and premiered just 3 months before his death in 1791. For many, it is the greatest of Mozart's operas, mixing both comedy and a deep seated seriousness, displaying how wisdom and passion can be victorious in life.

HISTORY
Set in an enchanted world, this whimsical caper tells the story of how a young prince, Tamino, along with Papageno, a bird catcher, also desperately searching for love, releases his beloved from the clutches of an evil priest. The magic that comes from his flute enchants nature and allows him to conquer his fears and overcome danger. But everything is not as it seems. Who is really the evil body here? 

Act 1 
La Flûte enchantée starts by Tamino being rescued from the great serpent by 3 ladies who work for the queen of the night. They show him a picture of the queen's daughter, Pamina and falls instantly in love with her. Shortly after he meets the queen, who tells him her daughter has been kidnapped by Sarastro, the evil magician. Tamino vows to rescue her and he is given a magic flute for his protection. A bird catcher, Papageno is instructed to accompany him. For protection against evil forces, Tamino is given a magical flute and Papageno receives magic bells. Upon reaching Sarastro's domain, Tamino is met by a priest who tells him it is Pamina's mother who is evil and Sarastro is merely protecting her. When they Tamino and Pamina, they fall instantly in love.

Act 2
Before Tamino and Pamina can be together, Sarastro imposes a series of tests on Tamino. The first is a test of silence. The second is to resist any temptation, no conversation, no food and no women. Believing Tamino is ignoring her, Pamina decides to take her own life, but is stopped by three boys who convince her that Tamino does indeed love her. Tamino and Pamina must be pass the third test together, the test of fire and water. By using the magic flute, they pass the test. Meanwhile, Papageno who has been searching for love the whole time, finds his true love Papagena by playing his magic bells. Pamina's mother is furious by the events and tries to break into Sarastro's temple, but is repelled. The singspiel ends with light triumphing over death.
