The Viennese aristocracy are no strangers to family feuds: boorish Baron Ochs auf Lerchenau interrupts the morning tête-à-tête between his cousin, the Marschallin, and her young lover Octavian, to ask for her help with his wedding plans, which are steered more by financial gain than love. Ochs does not suspect that Octavian himself, who is chosen to deliver the engagement rose, will eventually fall in love with the bride.

After his dramatic one-act works »Salome« and »Elektra«, which were based on ancient myths, Richard Strauss was drawn to lighter, more cheerful material for his next opera in the style of Mozart’s comic operas. His change of direction was embraced by Hugo von Hofmannsthal whose libretto created an artificial, rococo Vienna with customs and dialects as convincing as they are imaginary, which Strauss refined with anachronistic waltzes. This fantasy Vienna, bursting with joie de vivre, wit and traditional class boundaries, but which also bears traces of depression and morbidity, is not merely a reflection of the 18th century but also of the declining belle époque. Strauss’ score offers the full range of rich orchestral timbres with an unrestrained indulgence that culminates in the unsurpassed closing section: yet deep ruptures also appear. Only a few years before the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy, »The Rosenkavalier« is a swansong to an entire epoch.

The Venue's History in few words …

When the opera house situated on the Lindenallee was inaugurated in 1742, Frederick the Great intended to turn it into the cultural symbol of his ideal capital, the hub of the "Forum Fridericianum." This "enchanted palace," as the enlightened despot called it, is one of the rare vestiges of the old city still visible today, and a large part of German musics cultural heritage is contained within its walls. The Berlin Staatskapelle, for example, the orchestra connected with the opera, was founded in 1570 and the list of its permanent conductors includes names such as those of Meyerbeer, Mendelssohn, Richard Strauss, Furtwangler, Klemperer and Karajan! During the 19th century, the Berlin Opera remained a royal opera, where Weber's FREISCHUTZ was premiered. The activities of the Berlin Staatskapelle developed under Spontini's responsability, the first "Preussischer Generalmusikdirektor," ever appointed. This goes to show the importance of the ensemble in German musical life at that time, an importance which constantly grew, especially after the "Sinfonie-Soireen" were created in 1842, open to the public by subscription.

In 1919, the Royal Opera became a state opera, and played an active role in the exhuberant artistic activity that rocked Germany during the twenties: Erich Kleiber presented Berg's WOZZECK and popular harmonies of composers such as Kurt Weill resounded in this shrine of the lyrical repertoire, until Nazism cut short a period of intense creativity. During the war, Karajan forged his reputation in the theatre, until bombs destroyed the building, partially in 1941, and completely in 1945.

Because of its geographical situation, the Staatsoper became, in 1949, the Opera of East Berlin. In 1955, the East German administration reinstalled the company in its illustrious hall, rebuilt along the original plans, and one could soon applaud singers such as Peter Schreier and Theo Adam on its stage, musicians who helped create a truly Eastern German singing tradition.

Since the German reunification, the institution has been completely reorganized, especially under the impetus of Daniel Barenboim, who became its General Music Director in 1992. Proud of its impressive history, the present day Opera Unter den Linden hardly neglects its baroque beginnings, and it henceforth counts amongst those that most often produce pre-Mozartian lyrical works, such as CLEOPATRA E CESARE by Graun which opened the Opera's first season in 1742. But the house also commissions works by Pierre Boulez, while defending the traditional repertoire, in which Wagner occupies a large place. By thus juxtaposing tradition and innovation, the Opera Unter den Linden has become one of the institutions most representative of Berlin's new dynamism.

Synopsis

Der Rosenkavalier

The Knight of the Rose (Le chevalier à la Rose) is a three-act comic opera by Richard Strauss to Hugo Von Hofmannsthal, the original German libretto, and Harry Von Kessler. The opera was first performed at the Königliches Opernhaus in Dresden, Germany on January 26, 1911 under the direction of Monsieur de Pourceaugnac. Initially, the title of the Knight of the Rose was Ochs Von Lerchenau. Le Chevalier à la Rose was an immediate hit and it is reported that at the time of its debut, tickets were completely sold out. Today, Le Chevalier à la Rose remains a part of the standard opera repertory.

Act 1 The Marschallin's Bedroom
The Marschallinand Count Octavian Rofrano, her younger lover, exchanges vows of love in the absence of her husband. Baron Ochs, Marschallin's boorish cousin arrives to reveal his engagement to Sophie von Fanninal. Och desperately needs a knight to deliver a traditional silver rose to Sophie. However, for a moment, Mariandel (Octavian disguised as a chambermaid), intrigues Ochs.
The valet and the maids waltz in and out of the room, which gets filled with supplicants. Also, a morning serenade performed by an Italian singer gets interrupted by the arrival of Baron Ochs. After the agitation, the Marschallian finds herself all by herself. She doesn't think much of her egotistical cousin. At the thought of her early marriage, she starts to muse and contemplates her youthfulness and the unavoidable passage of time.

Act 2: The Von Fanninal's Home
The Marschallian comes to realize that Octavian will one day leave her for someone younger. However, despite that, she sticks with her choice to have Octavian present the silver rose to the bride-to-be. Sophie on the other hand forgets all about her pending marriage when she sees Octavian. As soon as she sets her eyes on him, it's love at first sight.
When Baron Ochs arrives at the Fanninal household, he treats Sophie rudely. How can she marry this arrogant man, especially when she has fallen for someone else? However, Ochs surprises the two (Sophie and Octavian) during a soft conversation. Octavian loses his cool and challenges Ochs to a duel in which the Baron gets slightly wounded in the fracas and cries out bloody murder. A doctor is called, but the Baron's spirit is lifted by only a glass of wine. Ochs receives Mariandel's letter asking him for a meeting, but it all turns out to be a trap set by Octavian.

Act 3: Private Room in an Inn
Ochs attempts to seduce Mariandel but he's caught when Sophie and her father in the act, Octavian is responsible. Ochs leaves the room embarrassed and in the meantime, the Marschallin, who arrives to sort out the situation, discovers that Octavian is in love with Sophie. A sublime trio follows.
