Synopsis

La Cenerentola

Listen to the Music & Opera playlist :

La Cenerentola is a drama giocosa written by a 25-year-old Gioachino Rossini. It was first performed in January 1817 at the Teatro Valle in Rome.

The libretto, written by Jacopo Ferretti, was inspired by Perrault's fairytale Cinderella. But Ferretti stripped the work of its supernatural elements, changing a few elements to portray a frail Cinderella, martyred by her family but who triumphs thanks to her great goodness.

The role of Angelina, alias La Cenerentola, was written for a coloratura contralto capable of great vocal agility, but is often sung by mezzo-sopranos. The work is not lacking in humour, thanks to its comic situations, rapid-fire lines and character games.

The plot of La Cenerentola closely follows the story of Cinderella, the fairy tale by Perrault. Scorned by her stepsisters, the pretty young Angelina believes she loves a young valet and goes to the ball. Decked out in her finest finery, she finds the man who is in fact the Prince, and flees from him after giving him not a glass slipper but a bracelet that will enable him to recognise her a little later. Masks fall, goodness and love triumph!
