The play was written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halevy, and based on a short story by Prosper Merimee.

Carmen was first staged on 3rd March 1875 in Paris Opéra Comique. The opera has then been recorded in various versions, since 1908 and has been the narrative of numerous screens and theater adaptations.
