Season 2016-2017: Teatro la Fenice (Venice)

Discover the 2016-2017 season!

The absolutely very iconic theatre La Fenice in Venice is an opera to visit at least once in a lifetime. Everyone remembers the terrible fire of 1996, but the renovation was so meticulous that the magic remains as before, erasing the sad memory. This wonderful space, delightfully decorated in the typical style of the eighteenth century, is surrounded by boxes in gold and velvet. As soon as you enter the doors, the spectacle begins.

Each programming season is prepared with great care. Between respect and modernity, the great works (mainly the Italian repertoire) are on the program, however not exclusively. La Fenice has always had a creation policy.

This season, we expect the world premiere of a new opera by Filippo Perocco. Aquagranda evokes a dramatic episode in the life of Venice, the terrible floods of 1966. The large international repertoire is defended by the famous Carmen staged by of Calixto Bieito and conducted by the great francophile Myung-Whun Chung. Wagner is also on display with Tannhäuser directed by Omer Meir Wellber. Fortunately, the Italian repertoire is dominated with great composers as Bellini, Donizetti, Puccini, Rossini and their masterpieces (Norma, L’Elisir d’Amore, La Bohème, Lucia di Lammermoor, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, La Sonnambula Madama Butterfly) and of course Verdi. Strong demand from the public is heard as La Traviata, created in this beautiful place, undisputed masterpiece of the Opera, is regularly played at La Fenice. The production by stage director Robert Carsen has become emblematic of the theater where it is the flagship production.

The history of La Fenice is often present, including this season, since Attila Verdi was also created here. But the main event this year is undoubtedly the total of three great operas by Claudio Monteverdi (who is celebrated for his 450th anniversary in 2017) L’Orfeo, Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria and L’incoronazione di Poppea directed by Elsa Rooke and led by eminent specialist John Eliot Gardiner who, for the occasion, summoned one of the most beautiful baroque companies in the world, the Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque Soloists.
