Season 2016-2017: Teatro alla Scala (Milan)

As everyone knows, December 7 is a special date in the international opera season since this is when the new season of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan takes off. The latest productions from September to November are also praiseworthy. L’incoronazione di Poppea by Claudio Monteverdi in the staging by Bob Wilson is led by baroque director Rinaldo Alessandrini. The Countess of Nozze di Figaro by Mozart is played by the divine German soprano Diana Damrau. Ian Bostridge sings Britten and Alan Gilbert replaces Nikolaus Harnoncourt to lead Porgy and Bess. Catch your breath!

 

The real season will be opened by the great music director Riccardo Chailly who has chosen Madama Butterfly for the event. The musical choices made by the maestro relate to a beautiful tradition, mostly Italian, with a revival of La Bohème in the reference staging by Franco Zeffirelli. Verdi is at home in La Scala and for this 2016-2017 season you can purchase tickets to attend performances of La traviata, Don Carlo and Falstaff. Bel canto is not forgotten with Anna Bolena by Donizetti. Two Mozart operas are also played this season, Die Entführung aus dem Serail and Don Giovanni, the masterpiece of masterpieces as well as Wagner´s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.

 

As for ballet, La Scala is also a reference where first dancer Roberto Bolle has often excelled. He will be performing again this season, alongside another incredible star Svetlana Zakharova in Giselle especially. Other big titles in the ballet repertoire that mark this season are Midsummer night´s dream and Swan Lake.

 

The renowned La Scala is notorious for its exemplary casts. Superstar Anna Netrebko sings Violetta in La Traviata, Sonya Yoncheva and Ailyn Pérez alternate in La Bohème. The joyfull Ambrogio Maestri, the Falstaff of his generation is of course contracted for the masterpiece of Verdi. Another great baritone Thomas Hampson takes a prominent role in his prodigious career, that of Don Giovanni while notable Wagnerian Michael Volle embodies Hans Sachs in The Meistersinger. La Scala also gives a chance to young singers like Federica Lombardi who will interpret all performances of Anna Bolena by Donizetti.

 

Other acclaimed debuts are those of Sabine Devieilhe in Die Entführung aus dem Serail by Mozart surrounded by a very fine cast (Lenneke Ruiten, Mauro Peter, Tobias Kehrer). There are just too many reasons to book your tickets as soon as possible!
