Stockholm is a beautiful city.

Stockholm, the northern Venice, welcomes you with open arms! Enjoy its charm… take the time to attend to an opera in Stockholm at the Kungliga Operan and to enjoy the Drottningholms Slottsteater's Festival in the summer!

A little history

The exacts origins of Stockholm are hazy. It appears for the first time in Birger Jarl's writings in 1252, although there have been older settlements as induced proven by runic stones.

Strategically located on the intersection of Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea on an archipelago, Stockholm grew thanks to trade.

Stockholm also had a major role in the relations between the kings of Denmark and the Kalmar Union. Between 1397 and 1523, Stockholm was the theatre of multiple power conflicts. The most famous one is the Stockholm bloodshed of 1520, during which Kristian II of Denmark invaded the city and executed the nobles and local politicians. Three years later, in 1523, Gustav Vasa reconquered the town and declared Sweden's independence, dissolving the Kalmar Union.

The fortifications were strengthened and the Vaxholm fort was built to protect the access from the Baltic sea. During the sixteenth century, the most exported product was iron. Stockholm enrichened quickly and kept developing, reaching 8000 inhabitants by the end of the century.

After the Thirty Years War, Sweden is a highly influent country. However, the king feared the old and medieval aspect of the cities, including Stockholm, would be incoherent with the country's power. Numerous construction plans were set up to modernise the city. In 1625, a fire destroyed a big portion of the city and triggered the remodelling of the city. Two large straight boulevards, the Stora Nygatan et Lilla Nygatan, were built. Very few medieval buildings survived the remodelling. In 1675, Stockholm housed 80 000 inhabitants.

During the seventeenth century, Stockholm entered a stagnation period. The plague killed around 36% of the population.

At the end of the century, during Gustav III's reign, the city started developing again. Building the Kungliga Operan in 1782 and the Norrbro in 1741-1801 showed the will to further develop the city.

In the middle of the nineteenth century, Stockholm rapidly industrialised. In the 1850's and 1860's, sewers, running water and gas were introduced to the city. Around 1880, a great portion of the new housings had electricity and the telephone.

Nowadays, Stockholm is one of the most developing European cities. High quality universities attract foreign students and various museums and historical monuments attract tourists.

What to do in Stockholm?

Walk around the little streets of Gamla Stan and admire the various colourful houses. You'll also find the Storkyrkan (Stockholm's Cathedral) there, but also many boutiques and restaurants!

One of the unmissable museums is the Vasa Museum. You will enjoy this naval museum, especially when seeing the Vasa, a warship armed with 64 cannons, which sank in 1628, but was retrieved in a very good shape in 1961!

You should also visit the city hall, where Nobel Prizes are distributed. Its facade which overlooks the sea and the beautiful interior will charm you!

The Djugården is the perfect place for a nice walk! This nice park is surrounded by a couple museums, but also an amusement park. You will definitely enjoy your afternoon!

Stockholm and music

Every music lover should attend to an opera or a ballet at the Kungliga Operan, Sweden's Royal Opera House! The old building was built in 1782.

During a masquerade, on March 16th, 1792, King Gustav III was murdered in the opera foyer. These events inspired Verdi's masterpiece, Un Ballo in Maschera!

The theatre reopened its doors in November, that same year. Gustav IV, the old king's son, did not appreciate his father's dying place being used as an entertainment place. He closed the theatre in 1806.

The old opera was demolished in 1892 and was replaced by a new one designed by Axel Johan Anderberg. The Operan was inaugurated in 1899 with a Swedish opera, Estrella de Soria by Franz Berwald. The beautiful neoclassical building and the golden foyer "Guldfoajén" are both beautiful! Numerous operas from the international repertoire are performed there with a great cast. Birgitta Svendén is the head of the Kungliga Operan since 2010.

The Drottningholms Slottsteater is one of the few European theatres that still use its original scene mechanics. The theatre opened in 1766 and has an unconventional T shape. This theatre allows the audience to attend to operas as they were at their creation thanks to the old special effects machines (thunder, lightning, …). The theatre is located by the Drottningholm castle.

Every year in July and August, a festival dedicated to seventeenth and eighteenth-century operas takes place at the Drottningholms Slottsteater. This festival is appreciated by music lovers. It occurs in July and August.

Go to Stockholm and enjoy an unforgettable moment in this beautiful Scandinavian town! Take a cruise in Stockholm's beautiful archipelago, have a walk and see everything Stockholm has to offer.

Do not forget to book your opera and ballet tickets in Stockholm! The Kungliga Operan's season will charm you. Attend to the Drottningholms Slottsteater Festival if you visit the city in the summertime! This original jewel is very unique!
